D-Rock's Game Design Portfolio
My name is Derek Allen Marunowski, but my friends call me "D-Rock". I have educated game development and design students for 11+ years at Full Sail University. While shaping the minds of future game-creative professionals, I have shipped several indie games, and worked on a number of unfinished projects. From concept and early design, to prototype and block-out, and then implementing gameplay elements and incorporating game feedback… I have a wide-range of skills to complete a multitude of game industry tasks.

SCRAPS - Teaching by design!
SCRAPS is a third-person adventure game that was developed to teach students the fundamentals of level design, designing with constraints, level mechanics vs game mechanics, and level pacing.
The original game was built in Unreal Development Kit. I helped port it to Unity in 2014, and have been a core developer / designer on the project since that day.
Students create a level, following a strict creative vision document, and take it from a level design document to a complete and playable experience in only three months. They design it in documents, create a top-down level map, prototype level mechanics, block it out in Unity, incorporate your mechanics, and polish it with final assets.

Prototyping
SCRAPS is a game about using a gravnull (similar to Half-Life 2's gravity gun) to solve puzzles. There are no puzzles in the game… it is up to the students to create them! I teach through examples, and those examples are created during "experimentation" sessions on Campus.
Power Socket
- Lift a power block with the gravnull and place it into a power socket.
- "Powers" up other mechanical objects in a level.
- Doors, Moving Platforms, Pistons, etc.
- Removing the power block will power-down the linked mechanics.
Sticky Blocks
- Lifted with gravnull and thrown at a wall.
- Throw hard enough at a wall, and it will stick!
- Sticks to the wall, creating a platform.
- Wiggles rapidly (with sound), but slows down to show passage of time before becoming unstuck.
Rubber Ball Turret
- Rotates back-and-forth to scan for a player.
- Locks-on to it's target.
- Fires rubber balls that knock the player backward.
- Loses sight at a specific range, or from obstructed view.
Liquid Rubber Seal
- Sparking electrical cables that deal damage.
- Causes the player to be knocked around when "shocked".
- Throw liquid rubber can at a wire to seal it!
